How to Keep Your Dentures Clean by Our Springfield Dental Office

Dentures soaking in effervescent water

Dentures require proper care to keep them functioning well and looking their best. If they’re not properly cleaned, you could risk getting a fungal infection called thrush, which is caused by an overgrowth of the fungus Candida albicans. You might also suffer from mouth sores caused by food buildup between the dentures and your gums.

In addition to maintaining your regular dental visits, there are several ways you can keep your dentures clean and fitting properly. At Northside Dental Clinic, here’s how we recommend you keep them clean.

Should I brush and rinse my dentures regularly?

Yes, after you eat.

Remove your dentures and rinse them thoroughly with water to remove any food particles or debris. You should also clean your mouth after you remove your dentures. Brush gently using a soft bristled toothbrush and make sure to remove any remaining denture adhesive from your gums.

Why do I need to soak my dentures overnight?

Because it’s not healthy to leave your dentures in your mouth round-the-clock. You must give your gums a break and a chance to breathe. As a result, it’s important to take dentures out and soak them.

Most dentures have to stay moist. Otherwise, they may lose their shape. You should put them in a mild denture soaking solution or water overnight and make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions on soaking them overnight. In the morning, rinse them thoroughly before you put them back in your mouth.

If you have any questions, ask our dentist at our Springfield dental office about how you should soak your dentures to thoroughly clean them overnight.

Can I maintain my dentures with regular dental checkups?

Yes, one of the best ways to keep your dentures in great condition is to see your dentist regularly. Our dentists can complete a professional cleaning at our Springfield dental office, ensure they fit properly, and make sure the inside of your mouth is healthy so you can continue to wear your dentures comfortably.
