How Fillings Work to Protect Your Teeth

Did you know that your oral hygiene is indicative of your overall health? It’s true! The Mayo Clinic discusses various connections dentists have been able to collaborate with general practitioners on when it comes to overall health.

Indicators of disease can be found in the gums, teeth, and back of the throat. Conducting effective oral hygiene is extremely important. Having a cavity taken care of, and covered with a dental filling, can help improve your oral hygiene, if needed.

Northside Dental explains how fillings work to protect your teeth.

What is a filling?

Dental fillings are vital to restoring function to previously infected teeth that have required cavity removal. A filling is placed into the remaining space of the tooth after the dentist works on the cavity, and restores the tooth’s ability to withstand pressure from biting. Fillings also protect against future cavities.

Which type of dental filling should I get?

How do I make my fillings last?

Fillings typically last between 5 and 10 years, but will require a replacement. How long your filling lasts will depend on how well you take care of it.

Proper aftercare for fillings include:

  1. Gently brushing the area surrounding your fillings or investing in a soft bristled brush to use while brushing.
  2. Gently brushing your teeth twice a day.
  3. Floss your teeth daily.
  4. Avoid hard foods that could potentially crack a filling or cause tooth sensitivity. Don’t chew on ice as ice is hard enough to crack a filling.

Maintaining proper care of your fillings will not only make them last, but it will also aid in maintaining your overall oral hygiene. This will prevent future cavities, and tooth decay.
