How to Have Great Oral Hygiene on Summer Road Trips

Are you planning a fun summer vacation with family or friends? Regardless of where you go this year, make sure you take great care of your gums and teeth while you’re at it! Here are a few ways to keep your mouth healthy and clean while you’re traveling.

Pack An Extra Toothbrush

If you’re flying to your destination, there’s always the chance that your checked bag may not make it there with you. If the worst happens, you’ll want to make sure you can still brush your teeth! It’s a great idea to pack an extra toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss inside your carry-on or personal item when you board the plane. That way, you don’t have to go out and buy those items when you reach your destination.

Opt For Travel-Sized Oral Hygiene Items

It’s easier to pack and store travel-sized toothpaste tubes, mouthwash, and floss. Foldable toothbrushes are a great space-saver too! Instead of cramming your full-sized toothbrush and toothpaste from your bathroom at home, invest in some travel-sized items that make it easy to brush and floss on the go. You’ll be more likely to stay on top of your regular oral routine if it’s hassle-free.

Watch What You Eat and Drink

Try to snack healthy while you travel and avoid sugary treats like candy if you can’t brush immediately after. Instead of choosing carby, sugar-filled travel snacks, opt for things like nuts, raw vegetables, and fruit to keep your mouth, teeth, and tummy both happy and healthy. If you absolutely can’t resist the soda on a road trip, use a straw to prevent your teeth from coming into contact with sugar as much as possible.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking lots of water is an excellent practice if you want to maintain good oral hygiene while traveling. Staying hydrated will prevent dry mouth after flying and flush away cavity-causing bacteria that like to cling to your teeth after consuming sugary, sticky, and starchy foods.

Use Bottled Water To Brush In Certain Situations

If you are traveling to a location where the water may be unsafe to drink, be mindful that you shouldn’t brush your teeth with that water either. Doing so could make you sick. Instead, use bottled water or treated water to brush.
